DeJong doubles up at UWW Cadets and will represent team USA at Pan-American Championships

Hunter DeJong competed this past weekend at the UWW Cadet National Championships in Akron, Ohio. DeJong lost first round of Greco to the eventual national champion and world team member Ashton Sharp. He then rallied off three consecutive wins to make the consolation semifinals. DeJong lost that match 9-7 to Jonathan Fagen of Suples Wrestling Club. DeJong would win his final match of the day to place 5th and claim All-American honors.

In freestyle, DeJong saw a rematch of the previous day’s consolation semifinal, only this time he would win via tech fall over Fagen. DeJong claimed a second round win over Alabama High School State Champion Christian Knop before falling by decision in the quarterfinals to another state champion from Missouri, Devin Winston. DeJong won his blood round match to claim another All-American honor but fell by fall in the consolation semifinal. In his final match of the weekend, DeJong again defeated Knop to place 7th.

The champions of each bracket will represent Team USA at the World Championships in Athens, Greece. Since DeJong was the only 85 kg wrestler to place in both styles, he was selected by USA Wrestling to represent the United States in the Pan-American Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. DeJong will compete in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle in early July.
